Elektron Laser Z

The Aeronaut Elektron Laser Z is a compact high-performance and low-cost laser cutter intended for cutting and edge sealing lightweight textiles such as ripstop Nylon and light Dacrons. The Elektron Laser Z is a heavy duty production machine capable of cutting in excess of 1 metre per second.

The Aeronaut Elektron Laser Z is a compact high-performance and low-cost laser cutter intended for cutting and edge sealing lightweight textiles such as ripstop Nylon and light Dacrons. The Elektron Laser Z is a heavy duty production machine capable of cutting in excess of 1 metre per second.

This laser cutter has been designed for industries such as paragliding manufacture, kite and sail making, where high cutting speeds and edge sealing are required on light fabrics. Since the laser power needed to cut these materials at speed is relatively low, Aeronaut have fitted a lightweight all-metal sealed laser to the rigid, easy to accelerate Elektron chassis. The result is a breakthrough in performance and price.

Traditional laser cutters for fabric are normally in the 100 to 200 watt range. This power level is required to cut laminates and heavy Dacrons at commercially acceptable speeds. Even at these power levels, the cut speed obtained is the similar or slower than the average cut speed of a rotary blade cutter on the same material. The higher the power of a laser, the more it weighs. This means the cost of the plotter chassis, motor, electrics etc. to carry a laser increase as the power of the laser increases.

When cutting typical rip-stop Nylon, a 100 watt laser could theoretically achieve cutting speeds of over 2 metres per second but the weight of the laser, power supply, fume extraction, cooling system and beam delivery components means that the plotter chassis has to be extremely robust with powerful and heavy motors. Cutting speed is then limited by the ability of the chassis to move the weight of the laser rather than the power of the laser.

Laser Cut Foils

Like many things, lasers have been getting smaller, lighter and cheaper over the years. Recently various lightweight low power lasers in either air or water cooled configurations have been released which are intended for gantry mounting on plotters.

These new lasers are around half the size and weight of the old lasers and have power outputs which are perfect for working with Nylon and light Dacrons. At full power, the laser is capable of cutting at the best production speed of the plotter chassis which makes excellent economic sense.

Cutting fabric like rip-stop Nylon with a blade can be problematical. When a cutting table gets grooved by the blade, the fine fibres of the fabric can get pushed down into the table. A few hangers or uncut threads can make removing cut patterns tedious and slow. The fabric is not always perfectly flat and fabric "bubbles" can roll under a rotary blade leading to dog-leg cuts.

From the beginning, the Elektron plotter chassis has been designed to be as light and stiff as possible so it can span up to 6.5 metres. When used in narrower configurations, the Elektron is perfect for mounting these new smaller, lighter types of laser. The result is that the Elektron Laser Z cutter has a brilliant combination of price and performance when used on light fabric.

The performance achieved by by the Elektron Laser Z is remarkable. With 3/4 oz spinnaker Nylon, cut speeds of over 1000 mms/second have been reliably achieved

Since there is no contact with the fabric when laser cutting, plotting is fast and very reliable. Cut patterns release cleanly. Nesting margins can be less than a millimetre. The result is big cost savings in time and fabric. Laser power can be accurately controlled for marking, perforating or kiss cutting.

So which ever way you look at it, if most of the fabric you want to cut is lightweight, old style laser cutters are not an economical solution. But the Aeronaut Elektron Laser Z is.

In fact it can be shown that for the same or less cost than a high power laser cutter setup, you can buy a both rotary blade cutter AND a low power laser and cut heavy materials quickly and efficiently with a blade and cut the light materials with a laser. Where edge sealing of heavy materials is required, they can be economically and effectively edge sealed by sliding the panels past a heated element on a table.

The Elektron Laser Z can be supplied with air or water cooled lasers and is fitted with a marker pen holder and efficient fume extraction. The metal sealed laser has a very low running cost with over 45,000 hours before re-gassing.
